Growing on the National Curriculum?

This article was first published on our home page in November 2013.  These changes are now in effect.

Schools Get Digging

Gardening is to continue to be included as a key area of the proposed National Curriculum for 2014; this is welcome news for British horticulture which has long been aware of a green skills gap emerging.  Children will learn about plants and their structures, the names of flowers and the different types of tree. They will also be encouraged to study the growth of flowers and vegetables that they have planted themselves and investigate local wildlife habitats.

Growing the National Curriculum in 2014

The new National Curriculum for Primary schools has been published and as predicted, gardening continues to be a key theme, particularly in the early years.  Learning outcomes for years 1 – 3 include:
Year 1

  • Identify and name a variety of common plants including garden plants and trees/ deciduous and evergreen.

  • Identify and describe the basic structure of a variety of common flowering plants.

  • Observe changes across the four seasons.

Year 2
  • Observe and describe how seeds and bulbs grow into mature plants.
  • Find out and describe how plants need water, light and suitable temperature to grow and thrive.
  • Identify that most living things live in habitats and micro-habitats.
Year 3
  • Identify and describe the functions of different flowering plants.
  • Explore the requirements of plants for life and growth and how these vary.
  • Explore the part flowers play in the life cycle of flowering plants.
Themes around planting and growing continue in years 4 to 6, after the seeds of interest have been planted.
