Hemlington Hall recieves grant

Gas grant for green-fingered pupils

Pupils from Middlesbrough’s Hemlington Hall Primary School will be going green and eating their greens after winning a grant from Northern Gas Networks.

The eco school has been awarded £3,500 to create a community garden which will be used for growing fruit and vegetables for use in the school and distribution in the local community.

The beat off tough competition from across the region to be chosen as one of 23 winners in the Northern Green Networks programme which has this year distributed £60,000 to schools and community groups across the region.

The money has already been put to good use creating a series of raised beds which will soon be planted up a variety of fruit and vegetables.

Martyn Walker from the school said: “The pupils are really excited about getting their hands dirty and doing some gardening and it gives us a great opportunity to teach them about the environment and sustainable living. It is also a great way to teach the pupils about healthy eating. “

Presenting the award from Northern Gas Networks, Duncan Lawton said: “Northern Green Networks was designed to support local community groups who are getting out there and making a difference to their local environment. These grants are a way of recognising the effort and dedication of these groups and help them go that extra mile.”
